What To Expect From A Security Guard Career

A security guard, bodyguard, security guard, or private security specialist is someone hired to protect persons and/or properties, typically on a short term basis. Depending upon the agreement between the security provider and the client, security personnel may be called upon to respond to active shooter incidents, riots, large protests, and other emergencies. Some private security firms and organizations also offer off-duty police security guards to customers. Security guards are often called upon to assist at disasters such as hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes, and even terrorist attacks. In these instances, security firms will employ guards from their own company. However, in many instances, security agents are contracted from a security management firm.

When considering security guard services, one must consider what type of equipment the security provider has available. In addition to having the physical ability to physically apprehend criminals, security guards also must have the skills necessary to handle the intricacies of the job. Basic training can help prepare security guards to work any number of emergency situations. It also prepares guards to assist any civilian in need of security assistance. By learning the basics of security guard duties, a guard can better assess a situation and immediately act to ensure the safety of both themselves and others.

In order to safely and successfully provide security services, a security guard must be licensed, certified by the National Association of Security Guard Contractors (NASGC), and have undergone extensive background investigation. The most thorough background investigation is conducted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The SIA requires security guard services providers to submit a comprehensive report about their employees and any criminal or civil records they may have. This information is also used by the FBI, which performs background investigations on individuals applying for government positions requiring security guard services.

As part of the security guard training process, aspiring security guards are required to undergo advanced security guard skills training. Aspiring security guards must learn about crime scene management, communications, physical security measures, and apprehension procedures. They are also trained to use handcuffs and other tools to subdue suspects. It is not uncommon for security guards to undergo specialized training in emergency rescue, which usually involves physical action from a safe distance. Many state laws require security guards to undergo an adequate training program to practice at the workplace.

Most office security service providers employ security guards that have passed all requirements and have been professionally trained. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there is an average salary of just under forty thousand dollars for a year. The average yearly earnings for security guard services is about seven thousand dollars. A security guard employed by a large company may earn anywhere between eight and twelve thousand dollars per year.

As with many other professions, security guard services requires continual education and development. Security guards are expected to keep their skills sharp by undergoing refresher courses on a regular basis. There are also many online courses available for security guard training. Some of these courses offer certification after passing an exam. Others do not. To get more enlightened on this topic, see this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_guard.
